Accelerated Climate Changes in Weddell Sea Region of Antarctica Detected by Extreme Values Theory

چکیده

On 13 February 2020, The Guardian, followed by many other newspapers and websites, published the news that on 9 Antarctic air temperatures rose to about 20.75 ?C in a base logged at Seymour Island. This value has not yet been validated WMO (World Meteorological Organization), but it is first time an extreme temperature was registered these locations. recorded have often described as “abnormal anomalous”, according statement made scientists working bases. Since polar regions shown most rapid rates of climate change recent years, this abnormality primary interest context vulnerability changes. Using data detected different bases, we investigate yearly maxima minima temperatures, order establish whether they can be considered usual events or abnormal. We found evidence for disagreement with values theory, indicating accelerated changes Antarctic, is, local warming rate much faster than global averages.

Climate impact on interannual variability of Weddell Sea Bottom Water

[1] Bottom water formed in the Weddell Sea plays a significant role in ventilating the global abyssal ocean, forming a central component of the global overturning circulation. To place Weddell Sea Bottom Water in the context of larger scale climate fluctuations, we analyze the temporal variability of an 8‐year (April 1999 through January 2007) time series of bottom water temperature relative to...

Accelerated sea-level rise from West Antarctica.

Recent aircraft and satellite laser altimeter surveys of the Amundsen Sea sector of West Antarctica show that local glaciers are discharging about 250 cubic kilometers of ice per year to the ocean, almost 60% more than is accumulated within their catchment basins. This discharge is sufficient to raise sea level by more than 0.2 millimeters per year. Glacier thinning rates near the coast during ...

C-band Backscatter Measurements of Winter Sea Ice in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica

During the 1992 Winter Weddell Gyre Study, a C-band scatterometer was used from the German ice-breaker R/V Polarstern to obtain detailed shipborne measurement scans of Antarctic sea ice. The frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FM-CW) radar operated at 4.3 GHz and acquired like(VV) and cross-polarization (HV) data at a variety of incidence angles (10-75). Calibrated backscatter data were record...

Temporal evolution of decaying summer first-year sea ice in the Western Weddell Sea, Antarctica

The evolution of the main physico-chemical properties of the unflooded 90-cm-thick first-year sea-ice cover at the Ice Station POLarstern (ISPOL) ‘‘clean site’’ is described. ISPOL was an international experiment of the German research icebreaker R.V. Polarstern. The vessel was anchored to an ice floe for an observation period of 5 weeks, during the early summer melt onset in the Western Weddel...

Late Cretaceous through Neogene Deep - Sea Benthic Foraminifers ( Maud Rise , Weddell Sea , Antarctica ) 1

Upper abyssal to lower bathyal benthic foraminifers from ODP Sites 689 (present water depth 2080 m) and 690 (present water depth 2941 m) on Maud Rise (eastern Weddell Sea, Antarctica) are reliable indicators of Maestrichtian through Neogene changes in the deep-water characteristics at high southern latitudes. Benthic foraminiferal faunas were divided into eight assemblages, with periods of faun...
